Britten - Director
& Founder |
Frances
Britten is an accomplished sculptor
and painter, who has had no
formal training. She believes
that everyone, regardless of
their needs, is capable of being
creative. This is the philosophy
behind Shute Farm Studio, where
all may come and make use of
the educational skills imparted
by the Studio's gifted tutors. |
| |
| Fran
was born in Washington D.C. Her father was
a naval constructor and her mother was a court
dressmaker - she has dedicated the Studio
to them in memory of their artistic gifts. |
| |
| She
trained as a ballet dancer, but following
the death of her mother, later became an
SRN, and then a Midwife. |

|
Fran is married
to a dairy farmer, Stephen,
whose family have farmed in Downhead for
six generations. She has a daughter and
three sons, and six grandchildren. Stephen
and her son-in-law Robin
have, with their technical and physical
support, been the strength behind the development
of the Studio and the accessible garden. |
| Fran
enjoys all forms of creative art, especially
sculpture and three dimensional work |
|
A
quotation that inspired Fran, which she
found at Lake Grasmeare Salt Works, South
Island, New Zealand, is : |
"I
am doing this because I believe it is worth
doing and I have the chance to do it."
